It is hard to resist the charms of many of Couperin’s pieces, among them the beautiful Menetou, the famous Barricades Mistérieuses or the amusing Moucheron, on which so many harpsichord students have worked since the XVIIIth century. Couperin began to herald a new style of writing in his second book of harpsichord suites, which placed greater emphasis on the sound of the instrument, often giving it a more voluptuous, graceful and even bucolic character. In this recording Aurélien Delage uses a marvellous instrument to display Couperin’s delicate yet rich sound textures: a copy of Tibaut de Toulouse by Emile Jobin.
