Additional information

Il violoncello di Corelli brings us to the origins of the solo literature for the violoncello – although we should say ‘the violone’. Indeed, the violoncello as we know it today in its standard form had many shapes before it was canonized into its actual proportions. Some instruments were bigger in shape and the smaller ones were called with the diminutive of violone – hence the name violoncello…  And precisely one of those early bigger brothers is the main character of this recording: the instrument played by Alessandro Palmeri was made by Simone Cimapane in Rome in 1685 is a rare testimony of the original size of violone in general. It is also unique in that it was employed in ensembles in Rome in which Corelli also played.

Alessandro Palmeri brings a florilegium of the early violoncello solo literature by composers such as Domenico Gabrielli, Giuseppe Pietro Gaetano Boni, Giuseppe Colombi and Giovanni Battista Vitali.
