Some French harpsichord music of the Grand Siècle has still to be discovered: besides Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, Louis Couperin and Jean Henry d’Anglebert, we can find composers of great quality who deserve much better than the silence in which they are held today. This is unquestionably the case with regard to Jean Nicolas Geoffroy. A large part of the works for harpsichord by Jean Nicolas Geoffroy, does not differ very much from the writing style of his contemporaries. Certain influences are noteworthy : Chambonnières, as well as Louis Couperin, with his harmonic language, his beautiful chaconnes or his fantasies for three voices Similarly, Geoffroy’s dance suites, with their groupings in the same key, also recall the book of the King’s harpsichordist, Jean Henry d’Anglebert.
